Edward Weston correspondence : Calif., to Alfred Honigbaum, San Francisco, Calif. : and ephemera, 1921-1937.

Five handwritten letters (6 p.), two on Weston letterhead stationery from Carmel, Calif., and two postcards from Santa Monica, Calif., to his friend Alfred Honigbaum in San Francisco. In one letter Weston writes of being awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship (the first ever given for photography) and his plans to use the money to travel throughout California for a year. In another letter (Aug. 25, 1935) he writes in detail of his being accused of being a Communist. "... I am labeled (or libeled) as a Communist... but to call me a Communist... is both ironical and funny. The Communists consider me practically a facist and an ivory-tower artist, though I am neither." He wonders about the source of the accusations and writes, "I am wondering if I could bring suit for libel. I would like to -- but against whom!" Also includes a photocopy of Weston's handwritten offer (sent out to a select list of 25 buyers) to sell 250 of his photographs for $1,000 to the first person or organization that responds. Publications: Enjoy Your Museum series, IIc Photography, by Edward Weston; Light and Shade by Felix Schanz (Vol. III, no. 7, June 1931); The Carmel Cymbal, "Edward Weston Edition," (Vol. 4, no. 20, April 17, 1935). Exhibition Pamphlets: Increase Robinson Galleries, Chicago, Ill. (Sept. 16 and Oct. 14, 1933); Delphic Studios, New York, N.Y. (Oct. 15-31, 1930). Miscellany: The Edward Weston Print of the Month Club subscription form and newspaper clippings, one containing a Weston photographic illustration of Robinson Jeffers and his sons.
